Wedding Lanterns

June 17th, 2009

To wed or not to get hitched ? That is the doubt. It never previously was the doubt. It used to be ‘When to marry?’ not ‘why to marry’. For years young ladies were expected and expected themselves to ascertain a husband young, have the ceremony and start up home with tiddlers and a furry friend, and devotethe rest of their lives to running a well run home. Perhaps because ladies have been freed from what were once their traditional functions, that a wedding is no longer as important and without doubt not the only route to venture down. In Actually umpteen people- both men and women- decidedly detest the idea of marriage, and can’t conceive of looking into a partner’s eyes and promising without compromise to spend the rest of their days with them until the end. In many ways it’s quite sad, because weddings can be such joyful occassions especially when they feature a handsome wedding gown and sky lanterns. But, ill-fated marriages can be destructive, financially and emotionally catastrophic, and the most lonely things of all. Though being in a ill-omened relationship is also incredibly isolating, somehow with the marriage stamp, it’s worse. Friends and family have certain expectations of a twosome when they are officially married and have supposedly spent so much dosh on their wedding day. They are expected to be happy or to at least try their hardest to be so. As a result of this sensed outside insistence, many married couples feel they have to put on a face and blot out their actual emotions. The reason why there used to be more marriages or why marriages endured a few generations ago is because couples had no choice but to keep ploughing on with their relationship. This is advantageous in some ways, but in others, it is very corrosive. Yes there were a greater amount of wedlocks, but there were also many more desperately miserable ones.
