Goldilock’s Wigs: I’m Tending To a Friend’s Search for Femininity

July 12th, 2009

Our group of friends never thought the incredible Caroline Upton, my youthful partner in crime, might someday need a collection of medical wigs. Her signature hair styles was synonymous with her femininity. But surprise surprise. The woman will always be recognized for her hair. Not many in town think to notice that she utilizes well-crafted African American wigs. You’d be surprised!

When we were young girls in our home town of Scottsdale, we once swept all the beauty pageants. A few years went by before her medical hair loss took effect and she went bald. I did hint at some synthetic wigs. Whatever, it didn’t matter much. Unfazed by medical hair loss, she fearlessly demonstrated her bald-headed look.

Obliged to show at our university’s roller hockey tournament, we taunted the players till someone accidentally flung the ball (or however you say it) into the stands. Quick on her feet, she dove for the ball and her head scarf landed in a beer, unveiling her naked head. No big deal, she lobbed it playfully to her man. What’d I tell ya about her spunk?

Of course, nobody is perfect. The same summer at our semi-monhtly stroll to the art gallery, where she sat me down and told me that she opts to go bald as a statement. She dare not look at human hair wigs, secretly acknowledging she would wear them. And who would have thought miss invincible changed the subject and asked that I dismiss the notion. I thought “oh, well.”

We got so worried about her. Later on, I called about settling the wig issue. After a long deliberation we both ended up with the obvious conclusion: we were going wig shopping! So I’m getting one too!

The both of us were flabbergasted by the options. She didn’t realize that women’s medical wigs could be so confidence inspiring for so many women. These lace front wigs made her so lovely. Personally, I pieced together a completely creative set of outfits to match our wigs. We do it all together, and that will surely endure. The other day she sent me her thanks for her wig, and said it rekindles new vibrance for many occasions. It’s heartwarming to have helped my best friend live a happier existence. And she’s still got the attitude.
