Getting a Breast Lift in New York? Some Surgery Basics

August 2nd, 2009

There are thousands of clinics that offer breast lift surgery in the United States, with over a thousand in New York alone. Breast lift surgery, or mastopexy, is an elective surgical procedure that lifts or changes the shape of a person’s breasts. It repositions the areola and the nipple, lifts the breast tissue and rids of excess skin. It becomes a breast augmentation surgery if the procedure involves the use of breast implants. In New York, breast lift procedures may start at USD4,000.

Breast augmentation generally produces a permanent change in the size and shape of breasts, which is not the case for a mastopexy. This is because the position and shape of the breast is dependent on elasticity of skin. Skin tends to be less and less elastic as it ages. Ptosis, or the sagging or drooping of the breast, is a natural part of the ageing process, particularly for naturally large breasts.

There are, however, a couple of things to remember to help maximize the results of a breast lift surgery. First, choose the best surgeon that your money can find. Shop around and interview as many surgeons as you can. Consider their reputation, experience and training, board certification, and hospital privileges. The timing of the breast lift is also important. It is best to undergo it after giving birth to your last child, as breastfeeding alters the shape of your breasts.

As mastopexy is a surgical procedure, accept that there will be some scarring. Some procedures, however, will result in less scarring than others. There are also procedures that are ideal only for particular breast sizes. Consider these when choosing a mastopexy procedure. The most common is the standard anchor pattern procedure, so named because of the incision method used. The surgeon makes a circular incision around the areola, a vertical incision towards the underside of the breast and a u-shaped incision along the curve of the breast. While this procedure applies to most breast sizes, this type is most ideal for smaller breasts. The doughnut procedure, on the other hand, produces little scarring, as the incisions are made only around the areola and nipple area. It is, nonetheless, not ideal for women with large bust sizes. Lastly, the laser bra lift procedure provides additional breast support by using the patient’s own skin, which makes it ideal for all breast sizes.
