Raking in Chips from the Rocks
September 30th, 2009Some poker online players stick to the fundamentals of sound play, and are often known as “rocks” because of their tendency to never deviate from a tight, conventional online poker game. The only trouble with this style is that it hardly ever wins big pots because the Rocks are too predictable. Players who use more creative aggressive tactics are easily able to exploit the rocks. It’s easy to drive them off the pot pre-flop with a big bet. Rocks are in some ways like robots. Their play is programmed to conform to certain standards and when they do actually bet or raise, their opponents simply fold leaving a scanty pot for the rock to collect. It’s easy to spot rocks because they rely on their cards to play instead of applying some psychology to their game. Rocks may not make many mistakes other than being too tight and predictable. They wait for cards to come to them rather than going after a win. Rocks may win some pots, but their predictable poker online play means they leave a lot of the money on the table that could be theirs. When you’re up against a rock, and a scare card comes out, then use it to scare away the rock. When you’ve got big hand against a rock, slow play it to keep the rock in the pot. Don’t fall into the trap yourself of becoming too predictable by always playing the same range of starting cards and adhering to hard and fast rules. Be tight aggressive most of the time, but mix it up with some loose bets and bluffs to keep the other players guessing, confused and outright afraid.
