Canadian Player Clinches Silver Medal at Pan Am Squash Championships
October 27th, 2009The Pan American Squash Championships comes to a close and Toronto’s bet Tara Mullins failed to bring home the gold medal in the women’s singles event after she lost the match to tournament top seed and world number 16 Samantha Teran of Mexico in three straight sets. Despite losing the match, Mullins stated that she’s happy with her performance and stressed that this is her first international medal of any kind.
The 32-year old player won bronze medals for the past two Canadian championships but has yet to clinch medals in the international squash scene until now.
Currently ranked 70th in the world, Mullins said that it was tough playing a higher-ranked opponent and added that her opponent was hitting the ball really hard which kept the pressure on her end.
Mullins reached the finals after her opponent in the semifinals pulled out due to injury. Teran, on the other hand, battled past Thaisa Serafini of Brazil in the other semifinal match.
The team event will start later this week and the seedings and the final draw were already determined. The Canadian team is now seeded fourth in both women’s and men’s team events. The players will have their hands full against higher-ranked teams and even those ranked below them as surprises are bound to happen if they let their guards down.
The squash racquet action at the Pan American Squash Championships continues at the team events.
