How Ken Mehlman of Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co. Works in Line with the Environmental Defense Fund

February 11th, 2010

Originally, when Henry Kravis and his partner George Roberts founded Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co (KKR) in the mid-seventies with the help of the First Chicago Corporation, their specialization was in highly leveraged transactions. But they have put together a remarkable green proposal which centers not merely on profitability, but also on the ecological impact of the companies they invest in. When Henry Kravis from KKR and the New York based Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) joined forces just a year ago green matters went mainstream. Their corporate mission is to offer encouragement to businesses to avoid procedures which may destroy the environment e.g. hazardous chemicals and unrestricted consumption of water resources.

In order to attain these goals, they apply eco-efficiency which calls for concepts like reducing the dispersion of toxic chemicals, maximum use of renewable resources, and recycling programs. Simple and effective, but the management didn’t grasp the full project’s benefits until the executive in charge of the project, Ken Mehlman, assessed the project subsequent to its first year in operation. Ken saw that eco-efficiency wasn’t only cutting environmental impact, but it was also saving business concerns a great deal of money, and so the Green Portfolio project was virtually an immediate hit. Currently, Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co and Ken Mehlman have nearly each and every business in their portfolio involved in eco-efficiency. Seeing that the portfolio has a value of almost one hundred billion USD, you can imagine what an enormous achievement this really is.

The two organizations alongside Ken Mehlman are further developing the initial project. The Climate Corps Program founded by the Environmental Defense Fund is a good illustration of this, it advances eco-efficient techniques to MBA interns. In recent months, Ken Mehlman has been in close collaboration with KKR to produce a variety of metrics that firms can use to quantify and oversee resources. This type of info is crucial as businesses can study all of their daily activities and find out exactly how they can resolve any issues while at the same time permitting staff to view how much they have moved on.

Henry Kravis, the KKC, and the Environmental Defense Fund have made cutting back their ecological impact less painful for businesses in every industry. In summary, the work of these organizations has made ecologically friendly business techniques not only viable, but commercially desirable, and their radical ideas are setting a new standard in today’s community.
